A big part of what you'll want to do is get people to buy into SEO - big charts showing how much traffic you get, where competitors rank better (have more pages indexed etc).. Lots of informational meetings will be really helpful to you. I suspect it would be easy to get buried in the technology, but to get real change, you'll need people to buy into your vision. and, for a bonus piece of advice, pay attention to the constraints around the existing systems - you may "know" that URLs are bad, but cost-justifying fixing them may be a challenge :) My one piece of advice (and congratulations by the way) would be to realize that in an organization that big, many people may not be aware of the impact that SEO has or why it’s important.
