Moving On…

Atunyote Golf Club gate

One gate closes; another gate opens…

I resigned from my SEO Manager position at Cars.com, and have accepted a position with Turner Broadcasting. The Title of the position is “Director – Search Engine Optimization, Strategic Audience Solutions“. So exciting!

I’ll be working with Topher and supporting his SEO efforts at CNN, as well as supporting SEO on the other Turner web properties, such as:

CNN Money
NASCAR
NBA
TNT
TBS

PGA (Not that I love golf or anything!)
PGA Tour (Ditto!)
Cartoon Network (and the International versions)
Adult Swim (Venture Brothers – Yay!)

For an in-house SEO guy, this is as good as it gets. I’m excited, scared, anxious… Running through lots of emotions. The most exciting opportunity of my career!

So I’ve started a list of all the things I’ll have to assess (internal training, current initiatives, development calendars, analytics, etc.) For those of you doing in-house SEO…

What one piece of advice would you offer concerning my new position?

Ahhh congrats! Sorry had to get that out. So excited for you Dan. What a fantastic list of properties to work with. Pure awesomeness.

As you know I don’t have as much to offer on the SEO side of things, but to build off your idea of “assess current initiatives” I can suggest looking at their PPC teams/strategies and see what they are doing to lace them with or supplement the SEO ones. There is almost always growth to be found when paralleling the two…so few in-house teams use the data collected from one piece of the puzzle to help guide them on the other.

Best of luck! Sooo excited for you!

Great gig, Dan, all the best of luck to you!

My one piece of advice is to meet (in a meaningful way) the core decision-makers in the organization as soon as possible, and start an ongoing dialog with them.

All the best SEO strategy in the world isn’t going to matter if you can’t get it carried out a tactical level. Secure buy-in early and often (with as many donuts as that requires:).

Congrats.

Congrats Dan! What a great move. Still looking for that niche golfseo.com blog you know :)

Grats man. Good luck on the new gig. Sounds like you will have your hands full with all those domains!

The biggest thing, is to plan, plan, plan. Hopefully you’ll have a team to execute with you. Education I’ve found is really important, especially those up the chain who don’t “get” what it is you do.

Oh yeah, and congratulations!

My one piece of advice (and congratulations by the way) would be to realize that in an organization that big, many people may not be aware of the impact that SEO has or why it’s important.

A big part of what you’ll want to do is get people to buy into SEO – big charts showing how much traffic you get, where competitors rank better (have more pages indexed etc).. Lots of informational meetings will be really helpful to you.

I suspect it would be easy to get buried in the technology, but to get real change, you’ll need people to buy into your vision.

and, for a bonus piece of advice, pay attention to the constraints around the existing systems – you may “know” that URLs are bad, but cost-justifying fixing them may be a challenge :)

Dan, sounds like a darn near ideal job for you. Just awesome. Do you still get to live in Chicago or will you have some new courses to try out in the very near future?!

Here’s my advice: Get your Venezuelan golfing in now!

Good luck, Dan. I look forward to being your arch-enemy for ever and ever.

Dan, this is really exciting. Working with PGA Tour – ideal dream job. Congratulations!

Congratulations Dan on this amazing opportunity!
I wish you and your family the best.

My one piece of advice: Change is good, even if you feel a bit overwhelmed or scared. By Sticking with the familiar we give up on the infinite possibilities and outcomes of any circumstance or opportunity.
