Google Golf Map – Ongoing Project

If you’ve ever had the time to dig deep into Google Maps, you may find it as addicting as I have. There are so many options available for customization, it just blows me away.

Case in point: I’ve been building a Google Map for all of the courses I’ve played. As most of you know from my Flickr addiction, I take A LOT of pictures when I’m on the golf course. It only makes sense to use these photos in a map. With a little knowledge of HTML, and a strong interest and desire, here’s what’s possible with Google Maps. I offer you my Google Golf Map.

Google Golf Map - national example

Basically, I’ve created a marker for each golf course that I’ve played. Let’s look at a little closer example, of the state of Michigan and the Chicago area.

Google Golf Map - state example

Here you can see that I’ve played all over the Chicago area, in Northern Michigan and Northern Wisconsin. Lots (of good golf in both places, by the way.) The real good stuff, and the real value of this map is at the golf course level. Check this out:

The thing to notice is that not only have I incorporated an image from the golf course, but I’ve also added links at the bottom that lead to the rest of the golf course pictures, as well as a review I created for the course on my blog.

So far I’ve received over 7,000 views of this map, and I couldn’t be more proud. I can’t wait to go golfing again this summer, just so I can add to it!

So check out my Google Golf Map, and play around with it for awhile. What else can I add? More importantly, what did this example cause you to do to help promote something of yours via Google Maps?

Great work Dan.
It’s reminded me to have a go myself. I checked out google maps couple of weeks ago and fully intended creating me own. Then life got in the way.
Just a thought, you take so many photos how do you get time to hit any shots?
Regards

Good question. Actually, it’s almost automatic now. I walk up to my shot, take a picture, and put the camera in my left pocket. It’s small enough that it doesn’t get in the way. I will say it’s much easier to do when walking; lots more time moving at a slower pace..

Haha, sorry to dig up an old thread… but I had the same question asked to me, by my Dad. I too have the Flickr bug! It’s too much fun! I do the same – I use my phone (HTC Touch Pro) for my “quick pics” now. I told my Dad I always “take the shot, then take the shot” – I know… cheesy. I still use my Olympus for my good still pics of any quality, but the HTC isn’t too bad at 3.2Mpx.
