In the past, I’d email the link to myself, which was kind of a pain in the butt. Then, I realized there was a much easier way to keep track of these links.

Instead of emailing them to myself, I just Favorite them. Then when I’m sitting in front of a computer, I can log-in, click on “Favorites” and all of them are present.

Too good of a tip not to share. Now do you have any Twitter time-saving tips?

I’ve been followed by the same person > 6 times in the past month, which is a tell-tale sign that they are using some sort of software to increase their follower count. (I’m not going to go into details; if interested in this, you should be able to find it easily enough.)

The bigger question I’d like answered is why? Why is follower # valuable, when (in essence) you cheat to gain those followers? So, I asked the individual, and the Q & A follow.

Our exchange began on March 21, when I tweeted the following 4 tweets:

Why have you followed me 4-5 times in the past week? Is it that software or something else?

If you don’t know what I mean by software, check out this blog post: http://tinyurl.com/cbmvcz

If it’s Twitter being buggy, it happens. Just wondering.

If you are using that auto-follow software, please stop. You’re too good for that.

He sent me an email explaining that he was “testing some stuff.” Fair enough.

Then this morning, he followed me twice in about 15 minutes. I then tweeted:

Finding it hard to believe you’re not using the cheater software when u follow me 2X today & 6X in the past month. Please stop.

He then sent me a tweet alerting me that he had just sent me an email. The email said:

Here are instructions for blocking me: http://help.twitter.com/forums/10711/entries/15355

To which I replied:

I’d prefer not to have to block you. From what I know of you, you’re too good to be doing this. Can I ask why? I’m interested in the reason you need to do this, and potentially ruin your reputation.

His response:

I use automatic tools to follow a large number of people that I’ve worked to identify as like-minded individuals. I don’t consider my practice to be spamming, unethical, etc. and I describe it openly when I discuss it with friends and colleagues.

I respect the opinion of anyone who disagrees with my methods. So far I’ve had one or two complaints from people affected. Though I’m sure there are many others, I have judged the risk that people will be upset to be far outweighed by the benefit to me and my followers. I spend several hours every day reading resources and passing on the best ones to my followers. See (link removed) for more on this.

I really do respect your opinion and right to privacy. If you prefer not to block me because you feel you might benefit from my Tweets and RTs, you could block me and subscribe to my blog feed. Every day I summarize the previous day’s tweets: (link removed)

So this creates a bunch of questions for me.
Is this OK? Is this a good enough reason to use this software? (he’s > 9,000 followers as of this morning; about 6,000 a few weeks ago.)

Am I just overreacting in thinking this just doesn’t seem right?

I use Twitter to converse with people about SEO, golf, automotive and Chicago. I don’t use it for business purposes. He’s in a position where he is using it for business purposes. Does that make it OK? Do the rules change?

What do you think? I can’t wait to hear your replies.

If you like this post you might enjoy following me on Twitter: twitter.com/danperry

As most of you know, I’m an in-house SEO at Cars.com. I also follow a lot of other In-house SEO’s. I had an idea today while having a Twitter conversation with @Topheratl (in-house SEO at CNN), that when we find an interesting blog post or white paper or any link that may be valuable to in-house folks, that we tag the tweet so others can find it too. Here’s the tag:

#inhouse

By using this in tweets, when you Search Twitter for the term (with the hash tag), you can see all the tweets specific for in-house SEO’s. Here’s a screenshot:

Now anyone can follow all the tweets for inhouse marketers! You can even subscribe to the RSS feed.

Remember, it only works if a lot of people use it, so if you’re an in-house SEO, or want to reach that audience with your tweeted links, be sure to include the #inhouse tag.

Joel Comm’s new book “Twitter Power – How to Dominate Your Market One Tweet at a Time” uses me as an example of how to build a following on Twitter; so exciting!
In Chapter 4 titled “Building a Following on Twitter”, one of the strategies discussed is to respond to requests (pgs. 85-86). Here’s where the little blurb about me comes in:

The second rule is that the more popular the questioner, the greater the benefits of lending them a hand – or even providing them with a good reply.

When they thank you or comment back, lots of people will see their response, wonder who you are and stop by your Twitter page to find out.

This is a strategy followed by Dan Perry (twitter.com/danperry), a search engine optimization expert at Cars.com, and he already has more than 850 followers.

By simply responding to a question, I got my name in print! It impressed my wife (which takes quite a bit), and it’s actually something worthwhile to bring up in casual discussion, etc.

So the lesson is this: Don’t just watch as others socialize on Twitter; join the discussion, because you never know where that Tweet might appear.

Read on Twitter (surprised? I hope not) about a new tool called TwitClicks and decided to take a look. The goal is tracking of a short URL, but it goes beyond the usual tracking that is currently available.

I’m doing a little “Rate Superbowl Ads via Twitter” thing this Sunday, so I decided to use one of the TwitClicks URL’s, and see what type of data was available. I only received 9 clicks (yeah, I wasn’t impressed either), but it does provide a good (enough) example of the data available.

The first screenshot shows the date, clicks, and URL, and then a small graphic representation of User Stats, Browser Stats, Source Stats and Location Stats.

For the second screenshot I clicked on User Stats, and it shows Date/Time, Location of Visit, and IP Address.

Clicking the Location Stats tab, you’ll see the next screenshot. It shows a Google map outlining where each click came from, as well as the City near the bottom, and a great display on the far right showing where the majority of clicks came from based on depth of color (I love this type of chart; reminds me of Omniture.)

Finally, the last screenshot has 4 tabs: Browser, Traffic Sources, Operating System and Screen Resolution (shown below).

This is really something, and I can think of many uses for this type of data. So what do you think?

UPDATE: Looks like there’s a much larger Superbowl ad initiative then this one, so I think (for the common good) we should all send our ad ratings/tweets here. Some big names are behind this (@briansolis, @louisgray, @Jesse, @jowyang, @chrisheuer, and @guykawasaki), and I think it makes sense to focus on one.
Last year, Jeremiah Owyang kept track of people’s opinions on the Superbowl commercials via Twitter. I am a HUGE fan of the commercials, and since Jeremy is not able to keep track this year (he’ll be on a plane), I’d like to step in and help. Like to participate? Follow these two simple steps.

Step 1: Follow me @danperry

Step 2: During the game when you see an ad, send a message to me with the name of the brand and your score. We’ll use a 0-5 rating, with 0 being well 0, and 5 being stellar. You are allowed to use 1/2 ratings as well. For instance, if you see a great Budweiser ad, send a tweet that reads:

@danperry Budweiser 4.5

or

@danperry Budweiser 4.5 Really loved the frogs!

Step 3: (Optional) Add a hashtag for folks to follow along – #sbads

That’s it! I’ll tabulate over the weekend, and post the results on Monday or Tuesday depending on the responses and amount of work.

I’m really excited about trying this out, so please follow me and be sure to retweet it!

The have to be active Twitter Users!

If they haven’t updated for a few weeks, or only posted a few times in the past year, forget it. I’m interested in those that are actually engaged in Twitter on a regular or semi-regular basis.

Without further adieu, here’s a collection of golfers on Twitter that you might consider following:

twitter.com/danperry – Hey I’m a personality too!
